I'm reading this series backwards and have just got to this one, the first in the Mobile Library series. Israel Armstrong, the North London nebbish. has quit working in a bookstore in Essex to work in a library in Ulster, getting there by bus and boat and arriving to find the library has no books. Its main plot is the least crime-related of the series but it's also the only one where violence lurks in the background. The community is strongly protestant and people have been killed or maimed by the IRA. This doesn't paint a picture of the warm and friendly Irish. The people of Tumdrum are dour and unwelcoming. Israel Armstrong is suspect, not because he's Jewish, but because it's possible that his father might have been a Roman Catholic. In spite of that it's fun and entertaining.
